My take on the situation

There are a lot of efforts to keep the language alive, but to be blunt it is dying, which is a shame. I'm not OP (and not Maori) but I do live in NZ. There are token efforts to use a smattering of Maori here and there - professional essay writers newsreaders will greet people with "hello" in Maori, elementary schoolkids learn a few words, that kind of thing, but few young Maori people - and basically no non Maori - can be bothered learning the language and so it is slowly dying.
