Meditation in a Bottle - What are the different types of pollen allergies?

by faina marco (2021-03-12)

If you are allergic to pollen, surely you have ever wondered if the symptoms will reduce with age or if, on the contrary, they could increase. In this week's post we solve this and other questions of interest for those with allergies in spring.
Do the symptoms of a pollen allergy change with age?
According to experts from the Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (Seaic), the natural history of allergies due to pollen does not usually change by age, but it will be influenced by changes in environmental exposure or by geographical changes. That is, the symptoms will depend on the levels of pollens that are produced in the atmosphere, which will be different from one year to another, influenced above all by weather factors such as rain, humidity, temperature and wind.
On the other hand, the symptoms are usually similar in both children and adults.
So far, immunotherapy (allergenic vaccines) is the only treatment that can reduce the intensity of the symptoms, improving the quality of life of the patient and even finally solving the allergy.
Are there more and more allergy sufferers?
The prevalence of allergies due to pollen is currently 30% in the adult population and 20% in the population under 15 years of age. However, pollen allergies have increased in both age groups in recent times.
As years ago, it was rare to find children under 5 years of age with allergies to pollen, the same thing happened with patients over 65 years. Previously, it was thought that the immune system responsible for the pathophysiological mechanism of allergies lost activity with age and, as a consequence, allergic diseases decreased in older people. But now people over 65 are being detected with, for example, an allergy to cypress trees in the winter months, who had never had symptoms.
Causes of increased pollen allergy
The truth is that allergic diseases due to pollen in cities are becoming more frequent, regardless of age, due to climate change and pollution.
The particles emitted during the combustion of diesel engines and heaters affect the plants and they protect themselves from contamination by modifying their physiology and producing new proteins, which are located inside the pollens, making them more aggressive.
In addition, the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) favors the development of plants by stimulating photosynthesis and causes an increase in the production of pollens.
Likewise, the increase in temperature produces an advance in flowering and, as a consequence, an increase in the period of exposure to pollens. This, accompanied by the increase in pollens and the presence of new proteins in them, could cause 1 in 4 Spaniards to be allergic to pollen in 2030.
What are the most recommended masks for allergy sufferers?
For more than 30 years they used the masks to avoid exposure to pollen and curb symptoms of allergy. However, allergy sufferers have always been reluctant to put them on for fear of being noticed. But this situation has changed with the COVID-19 pandemic, since now masks are mandatory for the entire population. However, you should know that not just any mask is effective for allergy sufferers.
In the first place, hygienic masks should be discarded because there is no guarantee that they protect from pollens, and surgical masks because they do not block all allergenic pollens by not fitting properly to the face, so they allow them to pass through the edges until nose and mouth.
The best option for allergy sufferers is, therefore, FFP masks, which block pollen with their polypropylene microfibers and seal any gaps, thanks to their nose clip and ergonomic shape. Wearing an FFP1 mask, which traps 80% of particles larger than 0.3 microns, is sufficient to reduce exposure, although FFP2 and FFP3 are more effective, filtering 92% and 98%, respectively.
Tips to curb allergy symptoms
In addition to the use of masks, the following recommendations should also be taken into account:
• Check the pollen levels, through endorsed applications or websites such as that of the Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology.
• Close the windows of the house and ventilate the house only during the first hours of the day or at night.
• Do not hang your clothes outside on windier days because it will collect a lot of pollen.
• Avoid field trips and outdoor activities on high pollination days.
• Shower and change clothes when you get home to remove pollen that we can carry in the hair or clothes.
• Travel with the car windows up and use an anti-pollen filter in the vehicle.
