Although experts aren't sure what triggers these ghost sounds, tinnutus has been linked to a long list of diseases that can trigger or worsen the problem. By far the most common suspects are prolonged exposure to excessive noise and the hundreds of medications that affect hearing. Interesting recent research points to changes that occur in the brain when hearing is damaged that cause random neurons to fire erratically and produce "noise," in the same way that a phantom limb causes pain.
