Lack of sleep decreases activity in the frontal lobe of the brain - the area responsible for logic, decision-making, and impulse control - while increasing responsiveness in the amygdala, the area that processes reward and emotion. The combination of less impulse control and greater reward makes it more difficult to resist temptation, even if you know the choice is not healthy.
