Sasuke Eyes

by harry mack (2021-02-19)

Sasuke belongs to the Uchiha clan, which possesses the Sharingan, a powerful eye-based technique. It is activated when a member of the Uchiha clan, known to be a sensitive and passionate people, is exposed to extreme tragedy, and the more consumed in darkness he becomes, the more powerful his eyes become. As Sasuke has been through such devastating experiences, it's no surprise that his eyes have progressed so far.
Sasuke is one of the main characters of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto series and also among the strongest shinobi to exist in the story. Being an Uchiha, he is blessed with the visual prowess of Indra Otsutsuki and his descendants, which gave him a clear advantage in most battles.
Over the years, Sasuke has gained multiple eye powers, from Sharingan to Rinnegan, all of which makes him an even greater force to be reckoned with. Being the reincarnation of Indra, his control over these eyes is immaculate and he has a wide range of which he's mastered with different eyes over the years.
Here are some of the major milestones in the development of Sasuke eyes
through Naruto:
Awakening
After witnessing the aftermath of the Uchiha clan's massacre, Sasuke is overcome by grief and fear, and he awakens his Sharingan while confronting his brother Itachi. Both his eyes have one tomoe (comma design) each. It seems that the trauma of the event makes him forget about his power until his Sharingan's reawakening much later. Although this event happens early in Sasuke's life, as viewers we don't actually learn about it until much later in the series.
Reawakening
Sasuke gets trapped in Haku's ice mirror and must do his best to protect both Naruto and himself from Haku's deadly needles. In this state, Sasuke's early stage Sharingan reawakens. At this point, his left eye has one tomoe and his right eye has two, allowing him to trace Haku's speedy movements.
Next Use
Against Rock Lee at the beginning of the Chunin exams, Sasuke has a chance to try out his Sharingan again. Although there are two tomoe in each eye now, it's unclear if there's any difference from before in his ability.
Maturity
After leaving Konoha, Sasuke fights Naruto at Valley of the End. Sasuke has a difficult time managing Naruto, who is determined to bring him back to Konoha, but he eventually unlocks the final stage of his Sharingan, three tomoe in each eye, and is then able to face off against Naruto on more even ground.
Mangekyou
Sasuke learns the truth about Itachi and grieves over his brother, in this process awakening the Mangekyou (Kaleidoscope) Sharingan. In the Mangekyou Sharingan, the tomoe disappear and are replaced with a kaleidoscope design, hence the name. With the Mangekyou, Sasuke gains new attack abilities, such as Amaterasu and Susanoo.
Eternal Mangekyou
Sasuke eyes receives Itachi's eyes as transplants, attaining the Eternal Mangekyou Sharingan and eliminating the crippling effects of the regular Mangekyou Sharingan. Sasuke's new Sharingan manifests the combined patterns of his previous Mangekyou and Itachi's.
Rinnegan
After meeting with the Sage of the Six Paths and receiving his chakra, Sasuke awakens in his left eye what is perhaps considered the ultimate eye technique: the Rinnegan. Unlike the red Sharingan, the Rinnegan is a light purple, and it allows him to teleport and see Madara's Limbo. Since he has just recently attained this ability, it's exciting to see what other potential it holds!
Come meet some other Sharingan & Mangekyou Sharingan users!
Here are some other Naruto characters that share Sasuke's special Naruto eyes:
Itachi Uchiha
Itachi is a true child prodigy, born to be a shinobi. His Sharingan and Mangekyou Sharingan abilities are some of the strongest in the entire Naruto Shippuuden series.
Kakashi Hatake
Although not a member of the Uchiha clan, Kakashi has been able to master the technique, even learning to use the rare Mangekyou Sharingan jutsu!
Madara and Izuna Uchiha
Madara and Izuna both made grave sacrifices to gain this Mangekyou Sharingan jutsu.
Shisui Uchiha
Shisui, one of Itachi's closest friends, was once a prominent member in the Uchiha community. However, due to certain tragic events, he was forced to disappear, leaving his eyes behind.
Nagato
Nagato's Rinnegan ability was implanted into him at a young age. After the death of a dear friend, he swore to use his jutsu to bring peace to the world, no matter what the cost!
Sasuke Recovery Mission
While recuperating, Sasuke reflects on his encounter with Itachi (along with Aoi's mocking in the anime) and is upset that, after all this time, Itachi is still so much stronger than he is. He is also jealous of Naruto who, despite being the worst student in their Academy class, has seemingly surpassed Sasuke, evidenced by his defeat of Gaara. Determined to prove himself superior, Sasuke challenges Naruto to a fight when he comes to visit him in the hospital. At first, Naruto refuses because Sasuke is still in no condition to fight, but Sasuke persists and Naruto agrees. The fight escalates quickly, culminating with Sasuke using Chidori and Naruto using Rasengan. Kakashi arrives and deflects their attacks into opposing water towers before they can clash. Sasuke initially believes his Chidori was at least stronger based on the damage to their respective water towers, but on closer examination finds that Naruto's water tower is destroyed. Sasuke leaves, jealous of Naruto's development.
Kakashi tracks Sasuke down afterwards and lectures him; the Chidori is supposed to be used to protect friends, not attack them. Kakashi reminds Sasuke that, no matter how painful the losses of the past are, it would be worse to lose the friends he still has. Kakashi leaves him to think over what he said, and Sasuke becomes conflicted between his desire for revenge and his friendship with Naruto and Sakura. Before he can take Kakashi's words to heart, Sasuke is confronted by the Sound Four. Sent by Orochimaru, the Sound Four fight with Sasuke to test his abilities and quickly defeat him. He tries using his cursed seal to gain the upper-hand, but discovers that they each have cursed seals also. The Sound Four offer to take him to Orochimaru so that he can gain strength like theirs, which he'll never achieve if he remains in Konoha.
Desperate to become stronger than Itachi, Sasuke decides to take the Sound Four up on the offer and leaves during the night. As he approaches the village's exit he is met by Sakura, who tries to persuade him to stay so as not to break up Team 7. When this doesn't work, Sakura confesses her love for him and asks to be allowed to accompany him at the very least. Sasuke refuses again so she threatens to call for help. He stops her by knocking her out, but thanks her before he does.
Sasuke is stopped at the Valley of the End by Naruto. Sasuke ignores his pleas to return to Konoha and is unmoved by Naruto's warnings that Orochimaru will take his body, believing that such a sacrifice is worthwhile if it will lead to Itachi's death. Naruto starts attacking him, ready to take him back to Konoha by force if necessary. Sasuke returns the attacks as a way of resuming the fight that Kakashi interrupted earlier. He also decides to kill Naruto, remembering Itachi's explanation that killing one's closest friend will awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. With his cursed seal, Sasuke eyes is able to land a number of serious blows. Although Naruto didn't want to believe that Sasuke would really kill him, his mounting injuries convince him otherwise and force him to call on the powers of the Nine-Tails within him.
Sasuke is surprised by the insidious chakra he senses, the sudden healing of Naruto's wounds, and the increases to his strength and speed. Sasuke becomes angry and asks Naruto why he would go so far for him, to which Naruto responds that Sasuke is like a brother to him and that he simply can't let him go.
When the energy dissipates, Sasuke stands over an unconscious Naruto, wounded and with no energy left to finish him. He decides not to kill him since that's what Itachi would want him to do, and he refuses to let Itachi decide his actions. He leaves his forehead protector behind with Naruto and continues on to Orochimaru by himself. When he finally reaches Orochimaru's lair he discovers that Orochimaru has already found a new body.
